Symptoms of a Memory
Currently in the studio, I am developing a series titled Symptoms of a Memory. Working in photography and charcoal, the project explores the duality of emotional experience. Through side-by-side portrayals of models exhibiting contrasting expressions, the work examines the tension of holding conflicting emotions simultaneously.

The Process
The Interview
I record the entire interview and experience. I include a QR code that links to a video of the interview experience. I feel this provides a deeper look into the experience of the person telling their stories.
The Portrait
From this edited photo of two "conflicting" emotions, I create a multi-media portrait. The main media is charcoal, but I will also use pastel, colored pencil, and alcohol marker.
The Photo
I interview my models asking them to tell me stories of their life. Some of the stories are of happy memories, some of difficult memories, all of them are emotional. I then photograph them as they tell me these stories.
I then choose two photos of "conflicting" emotions and edit them side-by-side.
